Facial Authentication¶
Facial Authentication is an optional add-on to the DragonFly system that adds biometric identity verification at the door — beyond the standard barcode scan.

How It Works¶
A lidar sensor mounted at the entry point measures facial geometry as a member approaches. The system requires two things before the door opens:
- A valid barcode from your club's app
- A matching biometric from the member presenting it
Both must pass. A barcode alone is not enough.
The lidar technology is the same system Apple licenses for Face ID on the iPhone, sourced from the patent-owning hardware partner.
What It Prevents¶
Credential Sharing¶
Members cannot pass their barcode to a friend. The barcode only works when the face matches. No code changes, no staff intervention — the system enforces it automatically.
Tailgating¶
DragonFly uses true intent detection — the only system on the market that distinguishes between:
- A real tailgate — one member intentionally holds the door open for another person
- A crossing — someone happens to slip in unnoticed while a member steps out
Only actual tailgates trigger an alert. False positives from door crossings are filtered out.
Flagged events are timestamped and linked directly to the video timeline in compatible VMS (video management) systems, providing clip-level evidence.
Member Enrollment¶
Members enroll themselves — no staff time required:
- Member scans a QR code at the club
- Signs up in the club's app
- Completes biometric enrollment on their own phone camera
- Walks in on their next visit
Total time: under 5 minutes.
Privacy & Data Handling¶
- No facial images stored — the lidar measures geometry only (mathematical vectors), not photographs. Faces are never captured or stored.
- Biometric data stays with the hardware partner — DragonFly does not hold biometric measurements. The hardware partner holds all relevant certifications.
- Access still images — a still image is captured for each access event and stored securely in AWS S3. Viewable in the DragonFly Cloud Portal.
- Classification — the system is classified as "facial authentication," not facial recognition. This is an important legal distinction.
Requirements¶
- DragonFly Premium tier subscription
- Facial authentication hardware (lidar sensor unit) — one per door
- Compatible club mobile app for member enrollment
